Prompt Fission Neutron Tool TM
Source: Neutrons can only be produced when in the hole due to a fail safe mechanism. The beta rays are generated from Tritium are so weak they are undetectable by most detector systems.
Detectors: Thermal Neutron Detectors; Epithermal Neutron Detector; Gamma Detector
Logging speeds: Typically 1m per minute
Minimum Hole diameter: HQ
Required Hole Attributes: Open hole required for assays. PVC cased holes will provide qualitative and not quantitative data due to the presence of Chlorine. The presence of 235U can be detected through casing.
Sampling Sphere:700mm
Calibration Details: Calibration is performed on a regular basis
Safety Details: The PFN tool is equipped with a mechanism that warns the user the tool is being used outside of the hole. The PFN tool is sensitive and should not be dropped or mishandled.
The tool is pressurised with SF6 and has Deuterium, Tritium (isotopes of Hydrogen) and Helium used in the production of neutrons. In these small quantities, these gases do not pose a health or environmental risk but it is recommended gases should not be inhaled if the tool has been punctured.
